R2 on FEET! REAL FEET!!

I had some time to work on R2..got the feet painted and put them on.

Looks cool..but ran into unexpected problems. I hope I can solve them or R2 wil be STATIC (not move).

The center foot doens thave the side moons on yet (they arent quite dry yet). One side will just pop on with magnets (same ones I used for the restraining bolt). This will give me access to get the bolt out and the foot off. The problem with the middle foot is the swivel caster it uses. For now I tightened the bolt TIGHT so it will stay parallel to the floor, but I will try to drill & tapp a small screw in to hold it in position, otherwise the shell will push onto the floor and drag badly.

The outer feet have a problem. The scooter drive wheel is at the back and so that the foot doesnt swivel and drag on the ground I have small rigid catsers at the front to hold it flat. That should have worked in theory, but the foot is bottoming out (or topping out) against the ankle. As a result the scooter drive wheels arent even touching the floor. If I remove the front rigid casters then the front of the foot shell will drag into the floor. I am going to try to file the ankle down enough so that the foot pushes easily flat, then the weight SHOULD be evenly dispersed to the scooter drive wheels and the front rigid caster (front of the outer feet).

The feet turned out ok, but kinda rough. They were a nightmare to make and now have lots of scrapes. Oh well..R2 can't look brand new. One foot cracked at a seam while I was pushing it on..so that has to be filled and touched up. DAMN~!

Here are a couple pics...

Full size Jabba..you know..I was close...well sort of. There was a nice looking full sized head on ebay I considered getting..and considered attaching it to a large brown/green bean bag chair....STAR WARS FURNITURE!!

I didn't do it tho.

Don't let people's reactions stop you. My wife always makes fun of me, but when we have company she is the first one to show it off!!!!

The toppling foot problem I've seen before and I think everyone is adding a little block behind the Ankle to stop this problem.
Victor has a pic of how he did his R2. http://vfranco.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
Scroll down and you'll see the block.
Also I have hear and will do this to mine, The drive wheels need to be in the front of the foot and the caster behind the drive wheel.
Chris Lee had this problem and moving the wheel forward solved it.
Hope this helps.

Wow...you are QUICK!!!

Thanks for the link! I think I will do that!!!! Unfortunately I cut my feet and designed them to work with the drive wheel at the back. With that plastic wedge I should be ok. I'm going to go see how that would look on the middle foot.

Thanks man!

Hey Hankey!
Long time no see.... I've been in the beginning stages of my R2 and stumbled across your blog. HOLY Crap you've gotten alot of work done on your full size replicas!!! Last I recall you were getting your Harrison Ford bust. I'll probably be buggin you from time to time about the R2 for advice :D

I'm starting with the dome (have ordered on a parts run) and frame (ordered). So I'm sure I have a couple years hell in front of me. I plan on 3 legged mode with dome rotation, movement and sounds/lights. I dont have the skill for a retractable leg.

Keep up the posts, I'll be on here and r2builders, Astromech factory ect.

Flan OUT!
